The Career Series: Dr. Roxanne Lawrence on Bridging Psychology and Organizational Solutions

At FMP, there’s no single path to becoming a consultant, and that’s by design. FMPers come from a wide range of academic disciplines and professional backgrounds, each bringing unique perspectives that shape how we approach challenges, collaborate with clients, and deliver meaningful impact. In the Career Series, we’re highlighting those journeys to show how different experiences translate into the skills and insights that define our work. We begin with a perspective rooted in industrial and organizational psychology, exploring how a background in understanding people and organizations translates into a career at FMP.

I am an industrial and organizational psychologist by training, with a Bachelor of Science in Psychology from the University of Miami and a PhD from the University of South Florida. My doctoral work focused on occupational health psychology, specifically how employees regulate emotions and respond to workplace stressors.

I was drawn to psychology early in life because I wanted to understand how people think, reason, and adapt. While I valued that interpersonal work, I did not want a career centered on one-on-one clinical practice. Industrial and organizational psychology allowed me to influence systems, policies, and team environments that shape how people experience work every day.

I chose FMP because of the people and the work. I first connected with the firm at the Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology (SIOP) conference, where the collaborative culture stood out immediately. FMP’s focus on organizational diagnostics, culture, and real-world solutions aligned closely with my interests on the organizational side of I-O psychology. It felt like a place where rigorous thinking and genuine teamwork coexist, and that impression has held true.

Much of my work focuses on identifying and addressing organizational challenges. That includes designing surveys, conducting qualitative and quantitative analyses, building dashboards, and translating findings into clear recommendations. I rely on research-based methods such as surveys, focus groups, interviews, and data analysis to identify root causes rather than symptoms.

Since joining FMP, my expertise has grown substantially. I have expanded my technical skill set to include Power BI, Power Automate, and app development, and I have deepened my understanding of the business side of consulting. FMP has provided the space to grow through curiosity, mentorship, and real-world problem solving. That combination continues to make this work both challenging and rewarding.
